Former World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz lost the semifinal clash against Chile’s Nicolas Jarry at the Argentina Open on Sunday, February 18. However, the Spaniard went down 7-6 (2), 6-3 against his Chilean opponent in the clay court tournament, he also was seen losing his cool and slamming his racquet.
The incident unfolded in the ninth game of the second set. With Jarry taking the first set 7-6(2) and leading the second set 5-3 at that point, the 20-year-old Carlos lost his cool and threw his racquet in frustration after things seemed to go against him in Buenos Aires, video of which is now going viral on social media.
However, it was third seeded Nicolas Jarry who sealed one of his greatest career wins. But the Chilean could not replicate his semifinal win, as he lost to home favourite and Argentina’s F. Diaz Acosta 6-3, 6-4, earlier on Monday, February 19.
It’s a difficult defeat for me: Alcaraz
The Spaniard was left in dismay after his semifinal defeat against Jarry. Speaking after his defeat, Carlos said, “It’ a difficult defeat for me. It really hurts. There are lots of things to improve. I played good tennis but I am far from my true level.”
“It was a complicated tournament, the first on clay for a long time. I didn’t take the opportunities I had, I didn’t play the tie-break well and it shows,” he was quoted as saying by NDTV.
The 20-year-old who made an exit from the Argentina Open, will next play at the Rio Open. He will feature against Brazil’s Thiago Monterio on Wednesday, February 21.
