During the high octane Scottish Premiership clash against Rangers, Celtic midfielder Arne Engels was struck in the face by a coin thrown at him from the stands at the Ibrox Stadium on Thursday, January 2. After being struck by the coin on the side of his left eye, Arne Engels fell to the ground just before he was about to take a corner for Celtic, and following that, he received treatment on the field, and fortunately, kept on playing the match.

Notably, it was a one-sided contest in which Arne Engels’ Celtic suffered a big 0-3 defeat against the Rangers, who had 24 shots at goal in comparison to just four from the visitors. Ianis Hagi opened the scoring for Rangers in the seventh minute before two second half goals from Robin Propper and Danilo sealed the deal for their team, and it allowed them to gain a substantial lead of 11 points over Celtic after both teams have played 19 matches each in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers updated that Arne Engels is "ok"

There were no fans from Celtic in the Ibrox Stadium during their latest defeat against Rangers because of the ongoing dispute in regard to the away ticket allocation. As far as the coin being thrown at Arne Engels goes, Celtic believes that the Police Scotland are investigating two separate incidents in the matter apart from stating that the “repeated targeting of our players and staff with missiles is quite appalling and completely unacceptable.”

In the post-match interview, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers gave an update that while Arne Engels is “ok,” the incident could have been catastrophic if the coin had hit him an inch lower, right in the eye. Meanwhile, Rangers have condemned the incident in the “strongest possible terms” apart from ensuring everyone that they will assist in the police investigation into the matter.
