Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese footballing icon, was praised for his selfless act on the football pitch during the AFC Champions League game between Al-Nassr and Persepolis at the King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh. The 38-year-old had gone down in the penalty box in the early exchanges, only to ask the referee to overturn a penalty awarded to him.

It was the second minute of the contest when the Al-Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo seemed to have been tripped inside the Persepolis’ defensive third, the referee pointed for the spot kick. But, in a surprising turn of events, CR7 went up to the referee, gesturing to him on camera that it wasn’t a foul, which led to the cancellation of the penalty after the intervention of the VAR.

Al-Nassr held to a 0-0 draw by Persepolis at home
Al-Nassr qualified through to the round of 16 of the AFC Champions League after a goalless draw against Persepolis of Iran at the King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh. The Saudi club played for much of the contest with 10 men after Ali Lajami was shown a red card in the 17th minute, but they managed to get a positive result at the end of the night.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who was withdrawn from the game in the 77th minute after he seemingly experienced some physical discomfort, has been one of the biggest keys for Al-Nassr’s qualification in the knockout stages of the AFC Champions League with four wins and a draw in five matches in Group E. Persepolis are in second place with two wins, two losses, and one draw, ahead of Al-Duhail of Qatar by four points in the standings.
