On Tuesday, March 26, the captain Cristiano Ronaldo fumed off the pitch in a friendly for Portugal against Slovenia after they lost 2-0 at the Stozice Sports Park in Ljubljana. The 39-year-old was unhappy about not getting two penalties in the match, letting his frustrations known to the fourth official in a complaint on the sidelines before leaving the ground.
At the Stozice Sports Park, Cristiano Ronaldo was barely involved in creating meaningful chances for Portugal, failing to convert one opportunity from open play. He was trying to get fouls from the Slovenian defenders and complaining to the referee about not getting them in his favour.
For Slovenia, Adam Gnezda Cerin opened the scoring in the 72nd minute of the second half, making a very impressive run from the central midfield. In response, Joao Felix pinged a header off the post, but the Portuguese team couldn’t manage to break through to level the score.
In the 80th minute, Timi Elsnik doubled the lead for Slovenia, putting the ball in the roof of the net from an acute angle to put the match beyond the reach of Portugal. With that, the 11-match winning streak for Roberto Martinez’s team came to an abrupt end.
Moreover, in their previous match, wherein Cristiano Ronaldo was left out of the Portuguese team, they managed to get the better of Sweden by 5-2 last weekend.
