Portugal international and one of the greats of the game of football, Cristiano Ronaldo, was seen break down in tears after he missed a penalty during the sides Round of 16 match at the UEFA Euro 2024. Playing against Slovenia in Frankfurt, the 39-year-old had emotions pouring out throughout the game as Portugal defeated Slovenia in a thrilling penalty shootout to reach the quarterfinals on Monday, July 1.
The 39-year-old stepped up to take the spot-kick after a foul on Diogo Jota, but his efforts was saved by Jan Oblak. Seeing Oblak keep his shot, Ronaldo held his head in disbelief despite having scored previous 29 penalties. Just after this , with the referee blowing the whistle for half-time, Ronaldo was seen break down in tears as he stood in a huddle alongside his teammates.

CR7 was although consoled by his teammate Joao Palhinha, he could not stop. But later in the match, he redeemed himself, scoring a penalty to help Portugal finish on the other side of the line.

Although Portugal fans sang “Viva Ronaldo” after his emotional outburst on the field was taken to the big screen in the Frankfurt Arena. At the same time, Ronaldo’s mother, who was also in attendance, was seen in tears seeing his son burst out in emotion.

“First it was sadness and then it was joy, that’s what football gives you, inexplicable moments, a bit of everything,” Ronaldo said after the match. “I didn’t make a single mistake this year and when I needed something the most, Oblak saved it. Slovenia spent the whole game defending and when that happens, it all becomes difficult,” he further added.
