Emma Raducanu, the British tennis player, suffered a tough defeat at the hands of American Jessica Pegula, the world number four, in a three-setter after needing medical treatment on court during the quarter-finals of the Miami Open. The 22-year-old, who is ranked 60 in the WTA Rankings, lost to Jessica Pegula with a scoreline of 4-6, 7-6(7-3), 2-6 after playing some of the best tennis of her career, but it wasn’t enough as the American held firm, especially in the third and deciding set.

After losing the first set in a see-saw battle, Emma Raducanu elevated her game to some of the best in her tennis career, taking a 5-2 lead with four set points to her name in the eighth game before calling in the doctor for medical treatment. Her blood pressure levels were checked on court before she received ice towels to cool herself down prior to continuing playing on.

It led to Pegula making a big comeback in the second set, forcing a tie-breaker, where Raducanu was clinical in her play, to clinch it relatively comfortably. But, in the third and deciding set, the American was way too strong for Emma Raducanu to handle as she breezed past her to not only take the set, but secure her place in the semi-finals of the Miami Open with a victory over the Briton.

Emma Raducanu defeated two top 20 players at Miami Open this month

Overall, the Miami Open was quite a fruitful event on court for Emma Raducanu as she defeated the likes of Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova in the top 20 before making a WTA 1000 event quarter-finals for the first-time in her career. With this tournament result, she is also going to make her long awaited return to the top 50 of the WTA rankings next week.

Jessica Pegula also noted the quality of performance from Emma Raducanu, saying that, “It was tough. I just wanted to come out in the third set really strong, really quick, and jump on her.”
