Early on Monday, October 7 (IST), Faf du Plessis-led Saint Lucia Kings lifted their maiden Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title as they defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors by six wickets at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. After etching their name in the history books with their maiden title, skipper Faf du Plessis recreated the iconic trophy celebration.

Following the match, the former South Africa captain, who led the side to CPL title, emulated Lionel Messi’s iconic ‘slow walk’, which he did after Argentina’s FIFA World Cup triumph in 2022. Earlier this year, Team India’s former T20I skipper, Rohit Sharma also recreated it after their T20 World Cup victory in June.

It is to be noted that this celebratory moment has gained vast popularity after Rohit Sharma did the same after India’s T20 World Cup win in West Indies. Earlier this year, Shreyas Iyer also brought up the same celebration after leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third title.

Saint Lucia Kings win first-ever CPL title; beat Guyana Amazon Warriors by 6 wickets

Speaking of the summit clash, the Faf du Plessis-led Saint Lucia Kings won the toss at the Providence Stadium in Guyana and opted to bowl first. The Kings then restricted the Warriors to 138/8 with Noor Ahmad picking up three wickets. The Kings chased the total in 18.1 overs, ending their 11-year wait for a title.

After leading the side to a convincing win, Faf du Plessis said, "Happy for the guys, they have been here (Sammy and Co.) for a long time. Think 10 or 15 years they have been waiting for the trophy to come home. Very happy with the bowling effort. At the toss I wasn't quite sure what to do and I felt like when they posted 138, when we walked off we were positive. I think in both the innings, last 2-3 overs really made the difference."

"The group of guys here, no superstars, we had different guys putting their hand up at different stages of the competition, so as a team I am really extremely proud of the guys. There was an excitement at the start of the competition in St Lucia about is this gonna be the season. First CPL trophy and it is a great achievement," he further added.
