Western Australia all-rounder Hilton Cartwright hit a monstrous 121-metre six in a clash against Melbourne Renegades. Notably, on Saturday, January 4, Melbourne Stars clashed against Renegades in the 23rd match of the Big Bash League at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The match saw the Stars claiming a five-wicket win in the last-over thriller. Earlier in the game, Stars’ skipper Marcus Stoinis won the toss and invited the rivals to put the score on the board first.
The Renegades started off on a weak note as they lost their openers within the first four overs. Things didn’t seem to be working for them, but Jacob Bethell and Jonathan Wells came up with powerful knocks of 49 off 36 and 45 off 31 to power the side to a competitive total of 168 for seven wickets. Peter Siddle and Joel Paris picked two wickets each for the Stars. In their chase, Stars kept losing players on one end, while Ben Duckett held nerves and scored 67 runs off 49 balls with a combination of four boundaries and three maximums.
Hilton Cartwright hits mammoth 121 metre six off a Tom Rogers delivery
On the third ball of the 20th over, when the Stars required eight runs to win the clash from four balls, Hilton hit a monstrous 121-metre six off a Tom Rogers delivery. Rogers missed the yorker by some distance and bowled in the slot in the middle. Cartwright stayed deep in his crease and dispatched the shot high, which went straight among the spectators. Owing to his six, the Stars required two runs in three balls, which Cartwright chased easily with a boundary on the very next ball.
The game saw Ben Duckett being adjudged the Player of the Match for his knock of 67 runs off 49 balls. He heaped praise on Cartwright and while speaking about the monstrous six, said, “Three times as far I can hit. Coming into the end of the innings, to hit fours and sixes, on a wicket which was a tiny bit slow is exceptional. [on Cartwright] Look at the size of him, so glad it came off today.” He added, “Winning games are so big in competitions. If we keep going and if this momentum keeps going, we keep believing. It's been a strange competition for me, thankfully I have contributed in games.”
