The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue are locking horns with England in the third Test of the five-match series at the newly renamed Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. The hosts earlier on Day 1 of the third Test, won the toss and opted to bat first. On the back of skipper Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s ton, the hosts posted 300-plus runs at Stumps on Day 1.
But like Day 1, the hosts didn’t have the start that was expected as Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav were dismissed early in the session, R Ashwin and debutant Dhruv Jurel held the nerves thereafter. But as the proceeding commenced, India were handed five-run penalty after R Ashwin ran on the middle of the pitch in the 102nd over.
Just after this incident, Ashwin was given a warning by on-field umpire Joel Wilson as England were awarded five runs.
According to MCC’s law 41.14.1, which comes under Unfair Play, states, “It is unfair to cause deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch. It the striker enter the protected area in playing or playing at the ball, he/she must move from it immediately thereafter. A batter will be deemed to be causing avoidable damage if either umpire considers that his/her presence on the pitch is without reasonable cause.”
