On Saturday, June 29, India registered the highest-ever total in the history of women’s Tests against a hapless South African bowling lineup at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The Indian women’s cricket team declared the first innings on 603/6, going past the previous mark of 575/9 set by Australia at the WACA Ground in Perth against South Africa earlier this year.
For the unversed, the Indian opening pair of Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana stitched together a partnership of 292 runs, which is the second-highest stand in the history of women’s Tests. Shafali Verma went on to become the 10th women’s cricketer to bring up a double hundred in Tests, scoring 205 runs in her innings, which is also the second-highest score for an Indian woman in the format, behind Mithali Raj’s 214.
Smriti Mandhana had also scored a hundred before getting dismissed for 149 runs, but the Indian innings never lost momentum. Although Shubha Satheesh didn’t get a big score, the middle order of Jemimah Rodrigues, the captain Harmanpreet Kaur, and Richa Ghosh, notched up fifties to propel the Indian total beyond 600 runs.
