MLS club Inter Miami have recently signed World Cup winner Lionel Messi, and, in a latest announcement on their Twitter, have confirmed that the Argentine will be wearing his legendary number 10 shirt, a number he made iconic during his time in Barcelona.

The teaser features a black surface being spray painted by a hooded figure. The camera pans out and reveals ‘Messi’ written in stylised pink font. The scene then shifts to Miami’s DRV PNK Stadium and shows Messi in his Miami number 10 kit. The player then turns to face the camera and says, ‘Sí, muchachos. Nos vemos en Miami’ (Yes guys, I’ll see you in Miami.)

Inter Miami confirms Messi’s signing

Messi’s signing for Inter Miami might be the biggest move in the history of the MLS. Previously, stars have signed for the league, but none carry the legacy, marketing or profile of the little magician. Having rejected a contract extension at PSG as well as a USD 200 million plus move to the Saudi League, Messi signed for Inter Miami late last season.

The 36-year-old has won everything there is to win in football at both club and international level. The crown jewel of his career is undoubtedly the World Cup triumph in Qatar, which elevated the already legendary player into his current status as probably the greatest player of all time.

Having won everything in Europe, it is likely that Messi is now looking forward to winning honours not only in America, but continentally. As an Argentine, Messi grew up supporting Newell’s Old Boys in Rosario and played youth football for the historic club. While he never made a senior team appearance for Old Boys, it has remained a dream to play for the club in the Copa Libertadores (The South American equivalent of the Champions League.) And while it isn’t for his beloved Old Boys, MLS clubs are soon going to be allowed to participate in the Copa Libertadores, according to CONMEBOL President Nicholas Leoz.

Despite his age, Messi was still one of the best technical and creative midfielders in Europe in his last season with PSG, winning the Ligue 1 title for the second time with the club.
