In an exclusive interview, Jannik Sinner, the world number one tennis player, called his three-month doping ban from the sport “unfair” apart from regarding himself “innocent”. It was in February earlier this year when Jannik Sinner, who is 23 years of age, had a settlement in regards to the two positive drug tests from last year with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), accepting the ban imposed by them.
Back then, WADA stated that Jannik Sinner hadn’t gained any advantage competitively from consuming the banned substance, while not putting him at fault for accidental contamination. But despite that, the Italian got banned from playing tennis professionally from February 9 until May 4, and because of this, he could be at the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year, slated to begin on May 19th.
The winner of the Australian Open from earlier this year spoke to Sky Sports in an exclusive interview on Saturday about getting a three-month ban from the sport in the aftermath of positive drug tests. He was quoted as saying, “What I've been through is a bit unfair but if we look at the situation it could have gone a lot worse. After we made the decision it took me a bit of time to refind my feet. I know what happened and I know that I'm innocent.”
Jannik Sinner to return at Rome Masters starting on May 7 this year
Moreover, the first tournament for Jannik Sinner on his impending return on the ATP Tour is slated to be the Rome Masters, which will start on May 7. He had this to say about his first tournament back after serving the three-month ban, “I don't know what might happen," he added, when asked how he thought his fellow players will react to his return. It will be difficult making a comeback with so much attention on me.”
“The people I have around me, not just my team but my family and friends, the people I'm closest to, have no doubts about what the truth is,” the 23-year-old added.
