The reigning champions, England are taking on Afghanistan in their third match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. While the side enters this game after a win over Bangladesh in Dharamsala, Afghanistan were defeated by the hosts in India in their last match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Earlier in this match, England won the toss and invited the Afghanistan side to bat first. While Rahmanullah Gurbaz gave a good start to the Afghans, their innings was put on breaks by brilliant bowling from the reigning champions. With the scoreboard reading 233/6 after 44 overs, Adil Rashid gave another breakthrough in Rashid Khan.
The England captain re-introduced Rashid into the bowling attack for one last time in today’s match in the 45th over. The 35-year-old England spinner tossed up a google on the middle on the first delivery of the over with Rashid Khan sweeping into the leg side. However, Joe Root, who was stationed close to the wide long on, sprinted across to his right and dived full-length to complete a sensational catch.

It is to be known that the Afghanistan all-rounder is known to be a key in the death overs, seeing his recent past performances. However, this brilliant catch by Root cut Rashid’s inning short as he was dismissed having cored 23 off 22 deliveries.
After 46 overs, Afghanistan had amassed 255 at the loss of seven wickets with Ikram Alikhil nearing his half-century.
