The Jos Buttler-led side won the toss and invited the five-time champions Australia to bat first. The Pat Cummins-led side posted 250-plus runs on the board but failed to build on long partnerships.

Further down the order after the Three Lions sent half of the Aussie side back to the pavilion, Marcus Stoinis and Cameroon Green added crucial runs, but a brilliant effort from Jonny Bairstow helped him dismiss Stoinis. On the fourth delivery of the 44th over, Stoinis pulled it off over deep mid but Bairstow, who was stationed there, jumped in the air to take an excellent catch and dismiss the Aussie all-rounder having scored only 35 runs.
