Spectators at the stadium during the fifth ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand grabbed limelight for all the wrong reason at the National Stadium in Karachi. During the fifth ODI, the crowd was captured cha nting slogans of “Parchi…parchi” towards Shan Masood, which translates to ‘receipt’ in English. In Pakistan, it is a reference to a player who has gotten preferential treatment or nepotism, as stated by several media houses. It means that the player has not progressed because of his skill but because of his contacts or influential backing.
Shan Masood has scored 163 runs in nine ODIs for Pakistan at an average of 18 and only 52 runs in the three matches of the Pakistan-New Zealand ODI series. Notably, this is not the first time Pakistan fans have called out a player like this. Last year, Khushdil Shah faced the same chants during the series against England. Later on, Shah’s teammate Imam-ul-Haq took to Twitter and asked the fans to avoid these kinds of chants as it badly affects the mental health of a player.
New Zealand got a consolation win in the fifth ODI as they won by 47 runs with Tom Latham and Will Young scoring fifties to guide them to 299 in the first innings. Henry Shipley and Rachin Ravindra got three wickets each as they bowled out Pakistan for just 252. With the win, New Zealand avoided a series whitewash but lost the ODI series 4-1. Fakhar Zaman was named the player of the series as he scored 363 runs in five innings at an average of 90.75.
