Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James became the first person in NBA history to score 40,000 points. James achieved the feat during their Saturday night clash against the Denver Nuggets at Crypto.com Arena, where they ended up losing the game 114-124. The NBA icon entered the game with 39,991 career points after scoring 31 points in their win over the Washington Wizards on Thursday.

The NBA icon entered the game with 39,991 career points after scoring 31 points in their win over the Washington Wizards on Thursday.

During the game against the Nuggets, James followed up his first bucket in the first quarter with a 3-pointer a few minutes later. In the second quarter, James made a layup, and then later in the game, he drove through Michael Porter Jr. to score 40,000 career points. He achieved the milestone a year later after setting the NBA’s all-time scoring record. In February 2023, he scored 38,388 points to surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record. 

James receives standing ovation during timeout 

The oldest player in the NBA received a standing ovation at the next timeout after he became the founding member of the 40,000 points club.  Not only this, but he also got a congratulatory pat on the chest from coach Darvin Ham. The match also had an in-arena video presentation which was preceded and followed by James raising the ball over his head. 

James’ family was also present during the game, and the NBA star sent kisses to the family members following the standing ovation. After the game, as quoted by Yahoo, James said that crossing the 40,000-point mark means something to him. He said, "I mean, I can't sit here and say no because, of course. No one has ever done it. And for me to be in this position and time in my career, I think it's pretty cool. Does it sit at the top of the things I've done in my career? No. But does it mean something? Of course. Absolutely. Why wouldn't it?"
