The captain of Argentina, Lionel Messi, appeared to be shoving the Uruguayan left-back Mathias Olivera during his team’s 2-0 loss in the CONMEBOL World Cup 2026 Qualifier at the Estadio Alberto Jose Armando in Buenos Aires. The incident happened after his teammate Rodrigo De Paul had a heated exchange with Mathias Olivera, which led to the other players from both teams intervening.

Argentina, who had won their first four outings in the CONMEBOL World Cup 2026 heading into the big game at home against Uruguay, didn’t have the best of nights on the football pitch. They had the majority of the possession, but the Uruguayan defence stood firm, frustrating the Argentina attackers, including Lionel Messi, who uncharacteristically lost his cool in the first half.

The Uruguayans made their limited chances count with Ronald Araujo opening the scoring for Uruguay in the 41st minute before Darwin Nunez doubled their lead in the 87th minute to put the hosts out of the contest. After scoring two goals, they also broke the shutout streak of Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, which lasted for 751 minutes.
