Harry Maguire, the Manchester United defender, was booed by the fans in Dublin after making a costly mistake that led to Athletic Club’s opening goal in their pre-season friendly. The England international, who was not wearing the captain’s armband in this match after a disappointing previous season. 

Aaron Wan-Bissaka passed an infield pass to Maguire as United was in possession of the ball. The center-back then bafflingly attempted to pass outside of his boot into the path of a teammate. The ball was cut out for Bilbao by Inigo Lekue, and it eventually found its way to Oihan Sancet. The ball then went in off the post and gave Bilbao the lead after he sent a sharp pass into Nico Williams, who then pushed the ball past a rushing Tom Heaton.

The error was met with loud jeers and boos from the crowd at the Aviva Stadium, who were clearly unhappy with Maguire’s performance. The 30-year-old center-back looked sheepish and frustrated as he tried to make amends for his blunder. He was also criticised by the commentators and pundits for his lack of concentration and composure.

Maguire has been under pressure recently, as he has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford. According to reports, Spanish giants Real Madrid are interested in signing him. Premier League’s West Ham are also interested in signing the defender according to multiple reports.

However, United are reluctant to let go of their most expensive defender, who joined them from Leicester City for £80 million in 2019. Maguire is still under contract until 2025 and has been a key player for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. He helped them finish second in the Premier League in the 2020-21 season and reach the final of the Europa League, where they lost to Villarreal on penalties.
