South African all-rounder Marco Jansen took a stunning blinder to dismiss Max O’Dowd in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. On Saturday, June 8, Netherlands locked horns with South Africa in the 16th clash of the marquee tournament at the Nassau County International Stadium in New York. The match saw South African skipper Aiden Markram winning the toss and inviting their Dutch counterparts to bat first.
The South Africans started off on a dominating note, and dismissed Netherlands’ opener Michael Levitt on a duck on the third ball of the first over. South Africa got their next success on the fourth ball of the fourth over, bowled by Ottniel Baartman, where Jansen pulled a brilliant catch to dismiss Max O’Dowd. The Dutch batter tried to hit the delivery and got a thick outside edge, which was taken by Jansen.
The 24-year-old dived to his left to a take a stunning one-handed blinder, sending both the Dutch opener back to the pavilion early. O’Dowd could only score 2 runs off six deliveries. Notably, in their season opener, South Africa registered a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka to begin their 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup on a victorious note.
As of writing, the Netherlands had lost four wickets. Earlier during the toss, South Africa skipper Aiden Markram said, “We've seen in the WC alone, can't take any team lightly. It's a big game for us.” On the other hand, Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards said, “We take a lot of confidence from the games we have won against similar guys. We played a pretty good game the other day. Our bowlers were awesome and the batters got it done.”
