In the second game of the Asia Cup 2023, Sri Lanka took on Bangladesh in a nail-biting thriller on August 31, in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The game started with Shakib Al Hasan coming on top of the toss battle and inviting the hosts to bowl first. The match which was interrupted by rain for a few minutes took a bizarre turn in the 37th over of the match.
Bangladesh batters Mehidy Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto were batting for their side when they engaged in a hilarious run-out mix-up. On the third ball of the over, bowled by Kasun Rajitha, improper communication between the Bengal Tigers batters a wicket. Hasan, who was on strike, placed the ball towards the square leg with Shanto quickly set off for a single.

However, Dhananjay de Silva threw the ball towards the non-striker's end while both the batters were at the striker’s end. While all the chaos and misunderstanding cost the guests their wicket, fans lauded Hasan’s selfishness for sacrificing his wicket for Shanto, who was well-set on the wicket.
At that time, Shanto was batting on 76 runs off 110 balls, and with Mehidy's dismissal, Bangladesh came down to six wickets with a score of 140 in 36.3 overs. Later, Shanto fell short of 11 runs from completing his hundred and got dismissed at 89 off 122 balls to a Maheesh Theekshana delivery.
