On Sunday, July 28, Mohamed El-Sayed, the Egyptian fencer, performed the iconic “Siuuu” celebration of the Portuguese footballing icon, Cristiano Ronaldo, after clinching a bronze medal in the Men’s Epee Individual event at the Paris Olympics 2024. The 21-year-old defeated Tibor Andrasfi of Hungary in a close contest by 8-7, to secure the first medal at the Paris 2024 for Egypt.
With this bronze medal, Mohamed El-Sayed shed off the disappointment of losing in the quarter-final of the Tokyo 2020 against the Ukrainian Igor Reizlin, who was the eventual bronze medallist three years ago. This is the second medal in fencing for Egypt after Alaa Aboulkassem won the silver at the London Olympics in 2012.
Moments after defeating Tibor Andrasfi in the bronze medal bout, Mohamed El-Sayed took off his headgear before doing the “Siuuu” celebration with a sword in his right hand.
The journey to winning his first Olympic medal at the Paris 2024 was quite a tough one for Mohamed El-Sayed, who started his campaign with a round of 32 win over the Colombian John Rodriguez 15-7. He went on to defeat the Italian Andrea Santarelli 15-10 in the round of 16 before getting the better of Neisser Loyola from Belgium 9-8 in the quarter-final.
The semi-final ended up in a 9-15 defeat for Mohamed El-Sayed against the world number three, Yannick Borel from France, which led to him earning a bronze medal match against Tibor Andrasfi of Hungary.
