On Sunday, February 23, Liverpool convincingly defeated reigning champions Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, to take one more step closer to winning the Premier League title for the second time in their illustrious history. Mohamed Salah, was the star of the show for Liverpool once again, scoring his 30th goal of the season before providing an assist to Dominik Szoboszlai in the first half, which proved to be more than enough for a victory.

Liverpool opened the scoring in the 14th minute off a cleverly executed corner routine which saw Dominik Szoboszlai playing in Mohamed Salah after receiving the ball from Alex Mac Allister inside the box. The Egyptian put his left foot through the ball and it ricocheted off one of the Manchester City defenders before finding its way into the back of the net, putting Liverpool 1-0 in front.

In the 37th minute, Mohamed Salah played an exquisite delivery in front of Dominik Szoboszlai’s path from the left, who calmly put it in the bottom right corner with his left foot past Ederson, to make 2-0 in favour of Liverpool. All in all, Manchester City did have the ball for more than two-thirds of the time, and created chances of their own, but the lack of finishing in front of the goal cost them dearly.

With this emphatic win, Liverpool are 11 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, but they have played a game more in the ongoing season in comparison to their London-based rivals. Meanwhile, Manchester City are a whopping 20 points behind Liverpool with a game in hand, and they are in a massive battle for the final two automatic UCL spots with Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Aston Villa.

The next fixture for Liverpool in the Premier League is against Newcastle at home in the midweek, while Manchester City are set to travel to Tottenham Hotspur.
