Indian thrower Neeraj Chopra registered a best throw of 89.45m in the final of the men's javelin event at the Paris Olympics 2024 and settled for a silver behind Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem. Chopra entered this year's Summer Games as the defending champion, as he won the gold at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 (postponed to 2021).
The Indian secured a spot in the final after throwing a massive 89.34m, which came in his very first attempt of the qualification round. But in the final, Chopra had a difficult start as he registered a foul throw which crossed the 86m mark and wasn't counted. With his second attempt, the 26-year-old had a throw of 89.45m, a season-best.
But this throw took him to second behind Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem who created a new Olympic record of 92.97m to secure first place. The third attempt was another foul throw for Neeraj as he remained in second place. The fourth, fifth and sixth throws were also fouls as Chopra couldn't defend his gold medal.
After qualifying number one in the final of the men's javelin event, Neeraj Chopra spoke about not taking anything for granted. Speaking to Jio Cinema, Chopra said, "I kept the Olympics as my priority so I did not compete too much in other competitions and it was a good start here."
