West Indies international and star batter, Nicholas Pooran on Sunday, September 1 (IST) etched his name in history books as he surpassed legend Chris Gayle’s record of most T20 sixes in a calendar year. The wicketkeeper-batter, who is currently playing his trade for Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) in Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024, etched this feat during his side’s game against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots.

Pooran turned on his beast mode as he smashed the Patriots bowlers all round the park during his stay for 43 balls. During his 97-run knock at the Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts, Pooran smashed nine sixes to surpass Chris Gayle’s record. Notably, the former Caribbean cricketer’s record of 135 sixes in a calendar year, which he achieved in 2015. Moreover, he bettered his previous of 121 sixes in a year, which he achieved in 2012.

It is to be noted that Pooran, who now has 139 sixes so far in 2024, has achieved this feat while playing for Durban Super Giants, Lucknow Super Giants, MI Emirates, MI New York, Northern Superchargers, Rangpur Riders, Trinbago Knight Riders and the West Indies. Apart from this, Pooran is also chasing Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter, Mohammad Rizwan’s record of most runs in T20s in a calendar year. 

Speaking of the match between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Trinbago Knight Riders in CPL 2024, the Andre Fletcher-led side won the toss and elected to bowl first. Batting first, Trinbago Knight Riders, on the back of 97 off 43 from Nicholas Pooran and unbeaten 73 from Keacy Carty posted 250 runs in their stipulated overs. The Kieron Pollard-led side however, restricted the hosts to 206/8 in the 20 overs, winning the game by 44 runs.

While the Kieron Pollard-led Trinbago Knight Riders will next take on Antigua and Barbuda Falcons at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound on September 6 (IST), the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots will take on Saint Lucia Kings on September 2 (IST) at the Warner Park.
