On Saturday, May 11, Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, arrived at the Italian Open, wearing a helmet after he was hit on the head with a bottle while signing autographs yesterday. After the unfortunate accident, the Serbian thanked everyone for their concern on his official X account while revealing that he is currently resting in the hotel.
Just a day ago, in his second round match at the Italian Open, Novak Djokovic defeated the Frenchman Corentin Moutet in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Afterwards, when the 36-year-old was signing autographs at the Stadio Centrale, a bottle fell from the stands and hit him on his head before he went to the ground as the security official tried to shield him from more harm.
After Novak Djokovic exited the venue, it was revealed that the bottle had fallen out of a fan’s backpack when they were waiting to get his autograph. The post on the official X account from the Serbian about the accident read, “Thank you for the messages of concern. This was an accident and I am fine resting at the hotel with an ice pack. See you all on Sunday. #IBI24”.
A day prior to facing the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo in the third round of the Italian Open, Novak Djokovic posted a video of signing autographs for the fans, but this time around, he had worn a helmet on his head. Although it is a precautionary measure from the Serbian to protect himself from a similar mishap the day prior, the caption on his latest X post, “Today I came prepared. #IBI24,” made it seem something a bit more.
