India is hosting England in the third Test of the five-match series at the newly renamed Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. While the hosts won the toss and opted to bat first, they posted 445 runs on the board with centuries from Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja and handy contributions from Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah.
With the brilliant performance with the bat, members of the Indian side did etch a few records, but as they took on the field in the second innings, veteran Indian all-rounder R Ashwin claimed his 500th wicket, dismissing Zak Crawley.
Bowling the 14th over of the England inning, Ashwin went for a slower one with the England opener going for a big, but Rajat Patidar completed a running catch to give Ashwin, his 500th Test wicket. However, the Chennai-born cricketer did not celebrate it in a grand style, but members of the team were seen congratulating the stalwart on this feat.
Speaking of R Ashwin, the Indian all-rounder has so far claimed 500* wickets from 97 Test appearances. However, his first Test wicket came on home soil in Delhi against West Indies in 2011, when he dismissed Darren Bravo, his 50th was Nick Compton (2012), 100th was Daren Sammy (2013). Thereafter he dismissed Kane Williamson in 2016 to claim his 200th Test wicket, while Alex Carey was his 450th wicket (2023).
