Led by their all-rounder Rashid Khan, Afghanistan etched into history books as they confirmed their first semifinal berth in the history of the T20 World Cups. The Afghan Atalans, who registered two upsets in the T20 World Cup 2024, beating the likes of New Zealand and former champions Australia, qualified for the semifinals along with India from group 1.
After opting to bat first, the Afghanistan side put up 115 runs on the board, courtesy a 55-ball 43-run knock from Rahmanullah Gurbaz. However, later on, on the back of a four-wicket hauls from Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq, the Afghans reduced Bangladesh to paltry 105 in 17.5 overs. Seeing them script history, Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz and their skipper Rashid Khan were seen break down in tears.
Although they shed happy tears on this massive feat, the players also were celebrating this moment, lifting several players on the shoulders.
