India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin threatened South Africa’s Marco Jansen to Mankad during the first Test at Centurion. On day 3 of the Test, Ashwin gave a soft warning to the Proteas all-rounder, when he had an opportunity to affect that run out and he decided to back out. In the last leg of the multi-format series , India locked horns with South Africa in a two-match Test series that kicked off on December 26. India settled for a 1-1 draw in the T20I format, followed by a 3-2 win over the hosts in the ODI series.

In the first of two Test matches, home skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and invited his side to bowl first. During the 98th over of South Africa’s first inning, Ashwin stopped his bowling action during the fifth delivery, while Jansen was comfortably outside the crease. The off-spinner has a reputation for affecting run-outs on the non-striker’s end. Earlier in IPL 2019, Ashwin sparked controversy by dismissing Jos Buttler.
Coming back to the Test game, Ashwin didn’t run Jansen out on the occasion even as the youngster was outside the crease. The Indian bowler didn’t say anything and went back to bowl the fifth delivery of the remaining over. Before IPL, Ashwin was involved in a mankad incident, where he had run out Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Thirimanne after he was backing up too far.
Talking about the match, Dean Elgar played a brilliant knock of 185 runs off 287 deliveries after he was caught out on a Shardul Thakur delivery. Marco Jansen, on the other hand, remained not out at 85 off 147 deliveries, when the hosts were bundled out at 485 runs in 108.4 overs.
