Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) clinched the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 title after beating Bengaluru FC in the final, played at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium on April 12. With this success, MBSG have become the first and only club to win India’s premier football tournament on home soil. MBSG made a comeback in the 72nd minute as Jason Cummings held his nerves and scored for the hosts. Before Jason’s onslaught, Alberto Rodriguez racked up a goal for Bengaluru. With scores levelled at 1-1, extra time was granted in the game. At the crucial point of the match, Jamie McLaren scored in the 96th minute and helped MBSG get the better of Bengaluru.
In the presence of more than 59000 spectators at the stadium, MBSG scripted history. Following the defeat, Bengaluru captain Sunil Chhetri and his teammates looked glum. After MBSGs sensational success, owner Sanji Goenka looked cheerful and remarked, “It’s a moment of great happiness, it’s a double, the league trophy and the trophy. This is for all the mariners, all the fans, for all the support, all the blessings. Truly, truly, truly, for me, there is no bigger blessing than to have mariners with us and support us.”
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper Rishabh Pant also extended his congratulatory message to MBSG and Goenka. The 27-year-old said, “Congratulation to Mohun Bagan and Sanjiv sir for having an amazing victory at ISL cup.” Besides Pant, LSG pacer Akash Deep also wished MBSG for the triumph. The speedster said, "Congratulations Mohun Bagan Super Giant for winning ISL trophy."
Saturday delivers double delight to RPSG Group Chairman Goenka
RPSG Chairman Sanjiv Goenka had an auspicious Saturday as he got double joy. Before the ISL 2024-25 final victory, he witnessed his Indian Premier League (IPL) team LSG prevail over Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Ekana Cricket Stadium.
In the crucial match, LSG beat GT by six wickets and won their fourth game in the marquee T20 tournament. Chasing 181 runs, Lucknow witnessed the batting heroics of Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran. Markram notched up 58 off 31 while Pooran struck 61 off 34. Markram’s superb innings got him the player of the match (POTM) award.
