On Tuesday, May 14, Prime Video released the official trailer of “FEDERER: Twelve Final Days” documentary of Roger Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam champion. The documentary, set for a June 20 release, will provide unprecedented access to the final 12 days of Roger Federer’s tennis career, apart from the reason behind his decision to retire from the sport.
As per the report from the ATP Tour, Asif Kapadia, the Academy award-winning Director, and his co-director Joe Sabia followed the former world number one, Roger Federer, to shoot content for his documentary when he took the retirement decision. During his illustrious career, Federer made 31 Grand Slam final appearances, winning 20 of those, including Wimbledon eight times, Australian Open six times, US Open five times, and French Open once.
Notably, Roger Federer played his final match during the Laver Cup 2022 at the O2 Arena in London, teaming up with his long-time rival and friend Rafael Nadal for Team Europe, against the Team World duo of Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock. The contest ended in a defeat for Federer and Nadal, who were outclassed by Tiafoe and Sock 4-6, 7-6, 11-9.
The trailer of the “FEDERER: Twelve Final Days” began with Roger Federer saying, “To my tennis family and beyond, today I want to share some news with all of you.” It leads to the camera panning on his wife Mirka Federer, who called her husband’s career an incredible journey.
When the news of Roger Federer’s documentary broke in February of this year, he had said, “Initially the idea was to capture the final moments of my professional tennis career so that I could have it later on to show my family and friends." “During my career I tended to shy away from having cameras around me and my family, especially during important moments. But I didn’t see the harm in shooting this as it was never intended for the public.”
