With a lot of debate going around the Indian playing XI ahead of the 2nd Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under, skipper Rohit Sharma has confirmed that KL Rahul will continue to open the innings along with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide, starting on December 6. After missing the first Test due to the birth of his second child, Rohit is back again to lead the Indian team for the remaining four Test matches.
In absence of Rohit Sharma in the first Test in Perth, KL Rahul was promoted as an opener along with Yashasvi Jaiswal. The right-hander had a great outing in Perth scoring 26(74) first innings and went on to score 77(176) runs in the second innings, including a record 201-run opening stand with Jaiswal. After that, Rahul also opened the innings in the practice game against Prime Ministers XI, while Rohit himself batted at number four.
I was watching KL Rahul’s batting from home with my newborn in arms: Rohit Sharma
Speaking at the press conference a day ahead of the second BGT Test in Adelaide, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma confirmed that KL Rahul will continue as an opener in pink-ball Test, while he will himself bat somewhere in the middle-order. Rohit also said that he was watching Rahul’s batting in Perth holding his new-born son Ahaan, and said that he deserves to play in that spot. Notably, Rohit also started his Test career as a middle-order batter before he was promoted as an opener in 2019.
“I was watching KL Rahul’s batting from home with my new born in arms. He played brilliantly so there is no need to change his position. KL deserves that spot at this point. I’ll bat somewhere in the middle,” Rohit Sharma said in press conference.
