Bangladesh pacer Shoriful Islam took a dig at the Sri Lanka team, especially Angelo Mathews, with his ‘timed out’ celebration. The incident took place during their first T20I clash at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet when Islam scalped the wicket of Avishka Fernando. The celebration reignited memories of one of the most controversial incidents in the ODI World Cup 2023 when Mathews was ruled ‘timed out’ during Sri Lanka’s clash against Bangladesh.
The incident took place in the 25th over, bowled by Shakib Al Hasan, after Sadeera Samarawickrma was dismissed and Mathews arrived to bat. However, he brought the wrong helmet and pleaded the case with Bangladesh players and the umpires. Just when Sri Lanka’s substitute player brought Mathews’ helmet, Bangladesh appealed for a timed out, and the batter was declared dismissed. After the incident, when Mathews took the wicket of Hasan, he gestured like pointing at his watch.
Shoriful Islam takes dig at Angelo Mathews with timed-out celebration
Almost four months after the incident, Bangladesh’s Shoriful Islam took a dig at his rivals, especially Mathews, and reignited Sri Lanka’s nightmares by doing the same gesture. It happened after Sri Lanka’s Avishka Fernando was dismissed. Notably, Fernando is going through a rough patch, and once again he failed to score big for his side, getting dismissed for 4.
Needless to say, Shoriful’s celebration took cricket fans back to the ODI World Cup as they saw Angelo Mathews becoming the first cricketer to get a ‘timed-out’ dismissal. Coming back to the match, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and elected to bowl first. As of writing, Bangladesh needed 20 runs in 10 balls to win the game.
