Indian batter Shubman Gill has made a highly awaited return to the nets after recovering from a thumb injury, which kept him out of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test match against Australia at the Optus Stadium in Perth. In a latest video shared by the BCCI on their official X account, the 25-year-old was seen sweating it out in the nets before talking about his disappointment of missing out on the first BGT Test, but he was happy about the team’s win.

Notably, ahead of the five-match Test series against Australia, Shubman Gill was one of the very few batters in form, and his absence from the first match wasn’t an ideal thing for the Indian cricket team. But regardless, the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy were amongst the runs with the ball, coupled by an exceptional bowling performance from captain Jasprit Bumrah and the rest of his teammates, which led to a massive 295-run win for India over Australia at the Optus Stadium.

I was disappointed for the first few days after the injury: Shubman Gill

In a clip posted on social media by the BCCI, Shubman Gill addressed his injury, which happened during one of the practice sessions ahead of the first Test match of the BGT series in Perth, apart from feeling good about his return to the scheme of things. He said, “When the ball comes on the bat, it is the best feeling. This is what I play for. I was disappointed for the first few days after the injury.”

The Punjab-born cricketer also alluded to how he was bracing for some pain during the latest session of batting in the nets, but it turned out to be quite good instead. He remarked, “Perth was the only venue where I hadn’t played before. I also wanted to play there. But we won the match, I am happy with it. We felt that there might be slight pain during batting. But everything was better than expected.”

Ahead of the second Test match between India and Australia at the Adelaide Oval from December 6 onwards, the visitors are slated to take on the Prime Minister’s XI at the Manuka Oval in Canberra in a two-day warmup match from November 30 onwards. While there is no confirmation about whether Shubman Gill will take part in the warmup match, his current progression from injury makes him a candidate for an appearance in the second BGT Test next month.
