India and New Zealand locked horns in the first ODI of the three-match series on Wednesday (18 Jan). India won the toss and opted to bat first. The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill got the team off to a good start as the duo put together 60 runs for the first wicket. However, India lost wickets in quick succession and Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ishan Kishan got out one after the other.
However, Shubman Gill stood tall at the other end and seemed unfazed by the dismissals in quick succession. The batter stitched a crucial partnership with Suryakumar Yadav for the fourth wicket. Gill also got to his half-century off 52 deliveries. The batter then put his feet on the paddle, notching up the next fifty runs in just 35 balls. Gill scored his 3rd ODI century and celebrated it in style. The batter took a bow before the Hyderabad crowd and accepted all the cheers.
Gill continued his onslaught as he hit Mitchell Santner for a boundary in the next over. Not only that, Gill punished every bad delivery bowled by New Zealand. The batter completed 150 runs in 122 balls. Gill looked fluent as ever and went on to score his maiden double ton. The batter eventually got out after scoring 208 runs off 149 balls.
