Stan Wawrinka has had highs and lows throughout his career but he has certainly won over the tennis fraternity with his performances over the years. The Swiss former World No.3 has gained the respect of tennis fans from all around the world and he credits them for his longevity in the game. The former French Open champion became a symphony conductor after his first-round victory at the French Open 2023 and gifted tennis balls to the crowd.

The veteran narrowly avoided an upset as he battled his way to a five-set 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-7 (2), 1-6, 6-4 win over Ramos-Vinolas in what was the longest match at the French Open, which was played for four hours and 35 minutes. After his game, the crowd on Court 14 chanted his name, and the tennis player obliged by gifting tennis balls to random people in the audience. Wawrinka held the tennis balls in his hand and threw them towards the section of the crowd which was loudest. Actions like these are what made him one of the most loved tennis players in the world.


Talking of his game, Wawrinka fought a long and hard game against Vinolas which went up to five sets as he displayed remarkable grit and skill to win the game. During the post-match press conference, Stan Wawrinka applauded his fans and mentioned that the spectators in the arena played a major role in helping him fight till the end. Wawrinka will now face Thanasi Kokkinakis on Wednesday, May 31 in round two of Roland Garros 2023.
