Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar backed star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah to become next captain of the Indian Test team very soon. Bumrah served as an stand-in captain in the first match of the recently ended Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Perth. Under his captaincy, India dominated Australia in the first Test and won by 295 runs to take a lead of 1-0 in a five-match series. Bumrah also led India in the fifth Test in Sydney after Rohit Sharma opted out. However, he suffered back spasm and didn’t come on field during the second innings.
In his interview with 7Cricket, Sunil Gavaskar hailed Jaspriit Bumrah for his captaincy and said that he could replace Rohit Sharma as full-time Test captain in near future. “He (Bumrah) could be the next man. I think he will be the next man. Because he leads from the front, he has got a very good air about him, the air of a leader but not somebody who is going to pressure on you,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying.
Bumrah doesn’t pressurise anybody: Sunil Gavaskar
Speaking further, Sunil Gavaskar said that Jasprit Bumrah is a kind of leader who doesn’t put pressure on anybody and expect players to perform their job well in which they are best at. Bumrah turned out to be a standout performer in the BGT 2024-25 and was adjudged player of the series taking 32 scalps in the five matches. However, his efforts went in vain as India ended up losing BGT after 10 years by 1-3.
“Sometimes, you have captains who put a lot of pressure on you. With Bumrah you can see that, he expects the others to do what their job is, why they are in the national team, but it doesn’t seem to pressurise anybody,” Gavaskar said.
