Mumbai Indians (MI) middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav displayed dissatisfaction on his team’s decision to retire out Tilak Varma in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Following a target of 204 runs, MI saw themselves under trouble when they had to score 24 off seven to complete the chase. Captain Hardik Pandya and Varma were carrying the responsibility to complete the chase for the visitors. However, Varma, who played the game as an Impact Player, was struggling to time the ball and he could score only 25 off 23. Noting his lethargic innings, the MI team management decided to call him back to the dugout in the penultimate over of the contest.

Amidst those developments, Suryakumar didn’t look pleased and also dissented against the decision. MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene went towards the star batter and strove to explain the reason behind the decision. However, Jayawardene’s explanation couldn’t convince him as the MI vice-captain looked gloomy.

Suryakumar’s 25th IPL fifty couldn’t save MI from their third defeat in 2025 season

After Varma’s departure, captain Pandya was joined by Mitchell Santner but both couldn’t complete the task successfully and handed two points to LSG, who clinched a 12-run win in the intriguing match. Earlier, Suryakumar Yadav and Naman Dhir stitched a 69-run stand for the third wicket off just 35 balls.

Their partnership helped Mumbai go close to the total but Dhir fell after hitting swift 46 runs off just 24 deliveries. Suryakumar also couldn’t stand until the end of the innings as he fell to Avesh Khan in the 17th over of the innings. Yadav concluded his innings after notching up 67 off 43. His knock was studded with 10 boundaries (nine fours and a maximum).
