Caroline Wozniacki, who announced her comeback to professional tennis in June 2023, returned to the competitive sport after three long years on August 8, Tuesday. The 33-year-old walked onto the court to the tunes of ‘Sweet Caroline’. In her first game after her comeback, the Danish international secured a 6-2, 6-2 win over her rival Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell.
With her win, she advanced to the next round of the Canadian Open 2023, which is underway in Montreal. As she walked onto the Montreal court after three years and eight months, Neil Diamond’s popular hit ‘Sweet Caroline’ blared through the speakers. Not only this, but the tennis star’s husband, NBA Champion David Lee, and father were also present in the audience during the game.
Not only this but while the former World Number 1 was walking on the court, a fan greeted her and said, “Caroline, just like you never left. Notably, ‘Sweet Caroline’ is the same song the 2010 Canadian Open winner’s fans sang for her when she retired. The Dane decided to draw curtains on his professional career to start a family in 2020 and welcomed a daughter and son in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
After her win over Birrell, Caroline said, “I have always worked very hard to ensure my physical condition. I put in a lot of effort to get here in good shape. Addressing the press after her game, she said, “When you play in matches, it's always different. We cannot reproduce the situation in training. I was satisfied to see how my body reacted today.”
