On Wednesday, January 8, Tottenham’s midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur suffered a freak head injury during the EFL Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool at home, which they won 1-0. After falling unconscious on the field, Rodrigo Bentancur’s teammate Pedro Porro immediately rushed to him before the rest of the players from both teams came around as the play stalled for nine minutes, to allow medical personnel to give him necessary treatment at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Following some oxygen being given on the pitch to Rodrigo Bentancur - who had freakishly fell while trying to head the ball unmarked in the six-yard box - he was stretchered off the pitch, and replaced by Brennan Johnson. Later on, it was confirmed to the media that the Uruguayan regained consciousness and started talking before he was taken to the nearby hospital in the city of London for further treatment.

My understanding is he is conscious and he was conscious when he got to the dressing room: Postecoglou on Bentancur
Tottenham Hotspur players, who were concerned about their teammate’s well being after suffering a freak head injury in the sixth minute, managed to deliver an impressive performance on the field, and kept a clean sheet after Lucas Bergvall’s eventual match-winning goal in the 86th minute. While talking to Sky Sports after the match, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou talked about his concern for Rodrigo Bentancur before giving some update on the unfortunate incident.
He was quoted as saying, “I don't have all the information. My understanding is he is conscious and he was conscious when he got to the dressing room. We took him to the hospital to get him checked over. It was worrying and always a concern but from what I know hopefully he will be ok.” Moreover, in the other semi-final of the EFL Cup, Arsenal were beaten 0-2 in the first leg by Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.
The second leg of both the EFL Cup semi-finals will be played on February 5 and 6, which will determine the two finalists vying for the trophy this season.
