New Zealand’s newly-recruited Test captain Tom Latham opened up on how he and the team is aiming to tour India with a fearless approach. Latham shouldered the responsibility as a full time captain after Tim Southee stood down after the series against Sri Lanka last month. He surely couldn’t have asked for a tougher first assignment than on a Test tour of India. Notably, India have been on a winning streak at home and have won 18 Test series in a row.
When the Kiwis tour the country, they will aim to put an end to the Indian team’s rule at home. Moreover, since New Zealand have managed to record only two wins against India in Indian conditions, Tom Latham would want to begin his tenure successfully. Statistically, New Zealand have played 35 Tests in India, and have managed to defeat the hosts only twice, once in 1969 and next in 1988.
We can play with freedom and no worry: Tom Latham ahead of India tour
The newly recruited captain opened up on his side’s approach and said that they would want to play with freedom and no worry. Latham was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying, "From my point of view it's about trying to continue doing the good stuff we've been doing, trying to put my spin on things. It's an exciting challenge going over to India and once we can go over there hopefully [we can] play with a bit of freedom, bit of no fear and try and take it to them. If we do that, hopefully we will give ourselves a good chance.”
"Think in India we've seen teams that have done well out there in the past have been quite aggressive towards them, especially with the bat they've looked to play a few shots, but also put them under pressure which is really important over there rather than sitting and waiting for something to happen. We'll decide on how we want to play when we get over there, but guys have got plans around how they like to approach things and hopefully we can fine tune those."
