Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra said that the team wants Shubman Gill to grow more as a person than a captain. Gill succeeded Hardik Pandya as the captain of the Gujarat-based franchise after the latter was traded back to his former franchise Mumbai Indians and named captain for the IPL 2024. The 2022 winners will be without their captain who led the side to two consecutive finals. While the 24-year-old has emerged as a modern-day batting star, he is inexperienced when it comes to leading a team.
However, the GT coach, former India player Ashish Nehra thinks he will do great in his new stint. Nehra also said that they all are excited to see how Gill operates as a captain. The World Cup 2011 winner said, “Shubman Gill is that kind of a player. He is someone who is looking to play and do well in all three formats. So, as a franchise, and supporting staff is excited. We will help him as much as we can to grow as a person more than as a captain.”
Nehra added, “If he grows as a person, then he will definitely be a better captain going forward.”
We are going to see him become the main actor: Ashish Nehra
Nehra spoke about the finishers in the squad, including Shahrukh Khan, saying, “We're going to see Shahrukh Khan become the main actor.” He added, “IPL is a very long tournament. It's not like we're playing just three, four, five matches. Conditions are also difficult in May and June. It will be hard on the players, especially fast bowlers. Injuries can also happen. So every player we have is important and those we have are experienced.”
Nehra further spoke, “Spencer Johnson, if you see, wherever he's played, he's played well. Azmatullah Omarzai again, has all the skills in this world as an allrounder and we are very hopeful that they'll have a great IPL."
