Now, the cold battle between WFI and the wrestlers is getting intense with the Sports Ministry of India also stepping in.
After top wrestlers including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik expressed displeasure at the members included in the Oversight Committee formed by the Sports Ministry, the government has threatened to take back their decision. "The ministry has no plans to reconstitute the oversight committee to probe the allegations against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh," a ministry source was quoted saying by PTI on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Punia has said that they will talk to Sports Minister after Republic Day. "We would like to speak with the Sports Minister after the Republic Day celebrations. We don't have any problem with any members in the committee but we should have been consulted," Bajrang Punia told PTI
The tussle between the wrestlers of the country and the officials is not going to end soon. After the likes of Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Shakshi Malik expressed their displeasure at the oversight committee formed, saying they were not consulted by the Sports Ministry before naming the members of the committee, the Sports Ministry has denied the claims.
"The government body has claimed that the names of three members included in the Oversight Committee were suggested by the grapplers. The names of committee chairperson MC Mary Kom, SAI's former executive director (teams) Radhica Sreeman and ex-CEO Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), Cdr Rajesh Rajagopalan (Retd) were suggested by Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik during their meeting with the minister on Thursday. As demanded by them, we duly incorporated the names of these three individuals in the committee," TOI quoted a source in the ministry.
A day after the Sports Ministry of India formed an Oversight Committee to probe allegations of sexual misconduct against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officials and to run the day-to-day affairs of the body, top wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia expressed their displeasure saying they were not consulted before the decision was made.
Olympic medallist MC Mary Kom will lead a five-member Oversight Committee that will probe sexual harassment charges against Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The government-appointed Committee will also run the day-to-day affairs of WFI for the next one month. The other members of the panel are Olympic medallist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, former badminton player and Mission Olympic Cell member Trupti Murgunde, ex-TOPS CEO Rajagopalan and former SAI executive director – teams – Radhika Sreeman.
