Hockey India announced their 18-member Indian men’s team for the prestigious Asian Champions Trophy. The tournament is set to be played in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia in China from September 8 to September 17, 2024. The squad saw Krishan Bahadur Pathak being named as the main goalkeeper, and filling in the shoes of legendary PR Sreejesh, who drew curtains on his career after winning the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. Sreejesh’s retirement opened the door for Pathak, who fulfilled the role of India’s standby goalie during the Tokyo 2020 and Paris Olympics 2024.

World Athletics U20 Championships 2024: India’s 4x400m mixed relay team finishes fifth

The Indian quartet, consisting of Jay Kumar, Neeru Pathak, Rihan Chaudhary, and Sandramol Sabu, finished fifth at World Athletics U20 Championships, failing to secure a podium finish. The 4x400m mixed relay team, who had earlier secured a finals qualification at the World U20 Championships, underway in Lima, Peru after finishing third overall. The Indian team qualified for the event after registering season’s best time of 3:22.54s in the heats, only behind Australia. However, they failed to continue their momentum in the final as they secured fifth place finish, clocking 3:22.92s.

English striker Harry Kane received the prestigious European Golden Shoe award in a ceremony in Munich after scoring the most goals in the 2023-24 club football season in Europe. In his first season at Bayern Munich, the 31-year-old found the net 45 times in 47 matches in all competitions, although he didn’t win a trophy at the club. Notably, Harry Kane became the first English footballer after Kevin Phillips to receive the European Golden Shoe award since 2000. He is also the third Bayern Munich player to achieve this extraordinary feat after Gerd Muller and Robert Lewandowski.

Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first player to score free-kick in 23 consecutive seasons

Portuguese football great Cristiano Ronaldo, who is also regarded as one of the best athletes across the world, has achieved another milestone. Ronaldo became the first player in the history of the sport to score a free-kick every season for 23 seasons. The footballer achieved the feat during Al-Nassr’s clash against Al-Feiha, where the former achieved a 4-1 victory over their rivals in the second round of the Saudi Pro League 2024-25 season. The goal turned out to be Ronaldo’s 899th career goal and with this, he moved a step closer to the historic 900 career goals achievement. 

Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo passes away a week after mid-match collapse

Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo who collapsed on the pitch after suffering an irregular heartbeat, passed away on Wednesday, August 28. The 27-year-old footballer, who played for Club Nacional, suffered a collapse during a Copa Libertadores match against Sao Paulo on August 22. During the 84th minute of the game, the young footballer had suddenly fallen on the ground, and had been undergoing treatment since then. However, Izquierdo breathed his last on Wednesday, as announced by the club on their social media.

Sen, who emerged as India’s latest sporting sensation came close to winning a medal at the 2024 games, in the semifinal against Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and against Malaysia’s Lee Zee Jia in the bronze-medal match. However, in both games Sen fell short and had to return home without any medal.
