The red card is a very popular term in the game of football. A player receives a red card for violating a conduct during a football game and is forced to leave the field immediately and is out for the rest of the game. However, the red card has also been introduced in the game of cricket.
The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in West Indies is the first league which introduced the red card in cricket in 2023. It was introduced as a penalty for the fielding team for maintaining a slow over rate. If the fielding team fails to complete 20 overs in a given time, they receive a red card from the on-field umpire, due to which they have to send one play er off the field and play with just 10 fielders for the rest of the game. Apart from that, the fielding team also must have six fielders inside the 30-yard circle, serving as penalty for the breach.
Trinbago Knight Riders all-rounder Sunil Narine is the first player in cricket history to receive a red card. During the CPL 2023 fixture between Trinbago Knight Riders and St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, the Knight Riders were found guilty for a slow over rate and their skipper Kieron Pollard had to send Narine off the field for the 20th over of the innings.
Why were St Kitts and Nevis Patriots handed red card in CPL 2024?
During the CPL 2024 fixture between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots and Trinbago Knight Riders in Nebraska on September 2, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots were handed a red card by the umpire for a slow over rate. Due to this, Patriots skipper Andre Fletcher had to take one player off the field in the final over of the innings and Patriots were on the field with just 10 players.
However, it didn’t affect St Kitts and Nevis Patriots much as they defeated Trinbago Knight Riders by five wickets in match number five of CPL 2024. Batting first, Trinbago Knight Riders posted 201/3 with the help of Evin Lewis’ 100*(54) runs and a 92-run knock by Kyle Mayers. In reply, Bhanuka Rajapaksa (68* off 35) and Tim Seifert (64 off 27) shone with the bat for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots as they chased the target in just 17.2 overs, at the loss of five wickets.
