On day 3 of first Test one of the fiercest cricket rivalries, the ongoing Ashes, England cricket coined a new term, Brumbella. Recently, a lot of new terms have been coined, Bazball, Bazbait, Nighthawk are to name a few. The term Brumbella was originally used to refer to a large pitch cover that was used to protect the ground. However, the term can also be used to refer to the unique pitch set up by England skipper, Ben Stokes and Ollie Robinson to end Usman Khwaja’s innings.
Khawaja was Australia’s standout performer in the first innings of 1st Test, who led his team to 386 and scored 141. He would have stood for longer had Ben Stoke’s plan not worked. Stokes formed a ‘human chain’ from short square-leg to short mid-on, which resembled an umbrella in front of the wicket. There was no slip fielder as well as the point region, but there were six fielders in front of the wicket.
Stokes set up the field when none of the conventional methods worked, and Khawaja who was on the field for the last 320 balls was bolting the door on England’s persistence.
Khawaja came down to attempt the 321st ball that could have yielded him runs. However, things did not go in the Australian opener’s favour and as a result of misjudging Ollie Robinson’s yorker, the ball crashed directly into the stumps.
