Former India opener and captain Gautam Gambhir said that he picked players because of their form, and not because he liked them. Gambhir was a part of one of the commentary panels during India’s clash with South Africa on November 5, at Eden Gardens, in Kolkata. Gambhir led Men in Blue for six ODIs from late 2010 to late 2011 and registered victory in all those matches.

During the Sunday clash, Gambhir made a remark on leading the home team and recalled his tenure as a captain. The former cricketer said that he would keep players’ form in mind instead of his opinion about them or whether he would like them while picking them in the team. Gambhir while commentating during India versus South Africa said, “When I was the captain, I picked players on their form and NOT because I liked them.”
Speaking of the game, the hosts maintain a streak of seven consecutive wins in the current season of the ICC mega event. In their eighth clash, the two-time champions locked horns with South Africa, who currently sit at the second spot on the points table.
In the Sunday clash, India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. The Indian skipper went back to the pavilion after scoring 40 runs after being dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the sixth over. India lost their second wicket in the 11th over, when rising star Shubman Gill was forced to walk back to the pavilion after scoring just 23 runs off a Keshav Maharaj delivery.
