Many fans were surprised at the inclusion of Gus Atkinson in England’s squad for the upcoming World Cup 2023 in India. His call-up is a result of strong performances in The Hundred as well as in the County Championship. The fast bowler notably clocked 90mph in The Hundred and troubled England captain Jos Buttler. Fans were surprised that Atkinson was included in the squad given his injury history and relative inexperience, but will be hoping that the Englishman will live up to the potential that he clearly has and has displayed at club level on an international stage.

In his relatively short career, Atkinson has played 14 first-class matches, 2 list A games and 41 T20Is. His career has faced a number of injury setbacks as a result of a recurring stress fracture. His last appearance in an international 50-over game was nearly two years ago and the English camp will be hoping that the 25-year-old can hit the ground running at the biggest cricket tournament of them all.
English national selector Luke Wright said, “First and foremost, Gus deserves to be in there. I'm sure everyone's been watching him, he's hugely exciting and he's been outstanding, not just in the Hundred but also how he's gone in the Blast. He roughed me up on a few occasions when I was still playing and marked my card. He's a real asset for us and we're delighted to give him an opportunity.”
Har ry Brook and Jofra Archer miss England Squad
England have not called up Harry Brook and Jofra Archer to this World Cup campaign. Ben Stokes had decided to reverse his decision to retire from ODI cricket and will return to this World Cup with England. He will also play the ODI against New Zealand next month.
This has meant that young batsman Harry Brook will miss out on his maiden call-up. Jofra Archer misses out on the squad due to being in recovery from injury. He will be included only as a travelling reserve.
Luke Wright said, “It’s incredibly hard on some players that are going to miss out. It shows the strength and depth we have in English Cricket and there are other names who are knocking on the door as well.”
