The umpires are a much less talked about part of cricket, as not many fans know many officials, but they play an important part in the game. The umpires are generally from the top three powerhouses of world cricket, India, England, or Australia. However there are exceptions, like Kumar Dharmasena, who has risen to be one of the top umpires.

Earlier this year, New Zealand’s Kim Cotton became the first female umpire to officiate a men’s T20I match. And this time at the Asian Games 2023, Ramaswamy Venkatesh, an umpire from Hong Kong, made history by becoming the first official from the country to be a part of a T20 game between two full-time members. 


Venkatesh was a reserve umpire for the India vs Bangladesh Women's semifinal in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou. The Tamil Nadu born umpire has also officiated ODI games, but they were between associate members. Talking about the game, India comfortably went on to the final after they bowled out Bangladesh for a meager 51. The Women in Blue chased the target in just 8.2 overs, with Jemimah Rodrigues hitting the winning runs. Here’s all you need to know about Ramaswamy Venkatesh:
