Rusty Theron became one of the very first talents to be unveiled at the Major League Cricket 2023. America’s first commercial T20 league got underway on Thursday, and the opening match was played out between Texas Super Kings and the Los Angeles Knight Riders. As the names suggest, both teams are owned by IPL franchises CSK and KKR respectively.

TSK skipper Faf du Plessis handed the new ball to Rusty Theron while defending a commendable total of 181. Theron struck gold on the third delivery of the very first over as he got the big wicket of Kiwi batter Martin Guptill. He bowled a slightly full-length delivery outside the off stump and Guptill slogged the ball but could not middle it, and as a result, the ball flew straight into DJ Bravo’s safe hands who was standing at mid-on.

Rusty struck again after a couple of deliveries in the same over as he cleaned up Rilee Rossouw with a beauty. He bowled another delivery much more off than the previous and Rossouw struggled to reach it and could just manage an edge and the ball went crashing into the stumps. This fiery first over reduced LAKR to a score of 4-2 and the defense for the total became much easier for TSK. It was a cakewalk after that and TSK sealed the game with a strong margin of 69 runs. His name was Rusty but his performance certainly wasn’t.

Rusty Theron began his international career in 2010 with South Africa for whom he played four ODIs and nine T20Is, before moving to the USA in 2019. He was also a part of the IPL when he was bought by the Deccan Chargers in 2011 and by Rajasthan Royals in 2015, but he did not debut for either team. The 37-year-old is now an integral part of the USA setup and is expected to play all the matches for TSK.
