Manchester United finally managed to hold back a major title after Erik ten Hag’s side secured a convincing 2-1 victory over their city rivals Manchester City to lift the FA Cup 2023-24 at Wembley. However, despite being crowned as the champions, there are effective chances that the Red Devils could be relegated to the UEFA Conference League.
Recently, before their historic win against Pep Guardiola’s side in the FA Cup, United were set for a season where they won’t be having any European football next season. However, with the title win, they will likely be playing the Europa League football. But, the Jim Ratcliffe-backed INEOS has possessed certain complications for the Red Devils.
INEOS, who is a conglomerated company currently owns a 27% share in Manchester United but they have a plan to invest a further €277m which will take their ownership stake to a greater share than 30%- more than the threshold for UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules. With the situation arising like that, there is a possible chance that Man United would be relegated to the UEFA Europa Conference League if INEOS couldn’t resolve the issue as soon as possible.
Adjustments to be made: NICE President
Another INEOS-owned team Nice is also on the verge of the same feat as they were also subjected to the same clause by the UEFA rules. However, the president of the club Jean-Pierre Rivere has told about any complications following their game against Lille and said, “Adjustments would have to be made. I won’t go into the details but it doesn’t pose an issue.”
